Proven results from a former college writing instructor
Even introductory college writing courses demand a sophisticated level of research, analysis, and writing— a level many high school writing classes don't demand. Bridge the expectation gap and give your child the confidence he needs to hit the ground writing. Ideal for the spring semester of your child's senior year or the summer before college, this workshop prepares high school students for college-level writing via guided reading, research, and writing about subjects they’re passionate about. Session topics include:
How to start and stay writing—including managing time, distractions, and stress
- Structuring long-format papers and common genres (annotated bibliography, rhetorical analysis, literature review, etc.)
- Integrating quotations and responding to academic ideas with confidence
- Cultivating mature critical thought and analysis
- Using academic databases (including a college library field trip)
- Reading and understanding academic articles
- Vocabulary every college student should know
- MLA, APA, and other common writing formats
- Making the most of peer-editing
- Visiting office hours and interpreting instructor feedback
